The awkward shape and dramatic level change of this small garden had rendered this garden largely unused by our client. The garden felt dwarfed by the elevated neighbouring property to the north and hemmed in by the east by neighbouring mature trees. With no interest within the garden itself, there was no focus resulting in your eye being drawn to the imposing and uninspiring neighbouring backdrop.

We would normally look beyond the garden boundaries and ‘borrow a view’ but in this case we needed to design a space to keep the interest below fence height. Entertaining space, interest throughout, low maintenance and keeping a usable family and dog friendly garden were the key criteria from our client. The need and hope to be able to entertain day and night and in all weathers were also right up there on the list of requirements.
